Thematic Focus: General

News:

The first phase of the preparatory process leading to the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration has now begun. Running from April to November 2017, its focus is primarily on consultations that will take place via six informal thematic meetings, the meetings of the UN Regional Economic Commissions, and a variety of other regional and global fora. More information is available in this concept note and work plan, as well as on the main web site for the Global Compact for Migration. IOM also has a micro-site setting out its role and vision for the Global Compact. See esp. its series of papers which explore themes listed in Annex II of the New York Declaration, the most recent one being "A Comparative Thematic Mapping of Global Migration Initiatives: Lessons Learned Towards a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration."

Research projects:

Refugees in Towns (Feinstein International Center) [info]
- Project that "collects and commissions case studies of urban settings (towns, cities or sub-areas of cities) in which refugees or internally displaced people have been living for more than two years. The goal is to develop a database of case studies exploring the experience of urban displacement from the perspective of both the refugees and the town. Each case study explores how the presence of refugees has led to political, social, and economic change in the town and describes the experience of the refugees themselves, focused on whether and why they have thrived or struggled."

Research Network on Celebrity and North-South Relations [info]
- Project started by an "international group of researchers who are interested in how celebrities shape North-South relations. Trusted celebrities with simplistic but powerful ideas are changing the relations of expertise between North and South. Still, academic discussion over celebrity engagement is often limited to theoretical critique or normative name-calling, without much grounded research into what it is that celebrities are doing, the same or differently —in different or even the same places—throughout the world."
